Changes to Statistical Activity Codes in Hungary

In Hungary, the standard sectoral classification of economic activities (TEÁOR) will change from 1 January 2025. This essentially means that your business/organisation will be assigned activity codes by the KSH or NAV.

You may be required to report the change, so we recommend you read the description below. If you have any questions about the changes and what to do about them, you can always contact us!

What can you expect to have to do?

  • Main activity

The Hungarian Statistical Office (from now on HCSO) will set a new main activity code for all companies according to TEÁOR’25/ÖVTJ’25 on its own authority, so companies will not have to do anything.

The HCSO will transmit the new main activity codes to the Hungarian Tax Office (from now on “NAV”).

Until 31 January 2025, the NAV will automatically, at its own discretion, modify – and transfer in the business register – the previously used main and other activity TEÁOR’08/ÖVTJ’08 codes that can be reclassified to the new TEÁOR’25/ÖVTJ’25 system on the basis of a translation key.

In the case of partnerships, the change in the main activity code also requires an amendment to the articles of association, which can be amended at the time of the next change in the business register. (If the organization changes its main activity code after 1 July 2025, the change must be reflected immediately in the articles of association.)

Please contact your legal adviser for any changes to the articles of association.

  • Other activities

For other activities, the tax authority will translate clearly reclassifiable activities on the basis of a translation key until 31 January 2025.

The NAV will only automatically modify the old codes (Teáor’08/övtj’08) which are not split into several codes according to the new classification (Teáor’25/övtj’25).

If activities are split into more than one code according to the new classification, companies will be obliged to notify by 1 July 2025.

For information on how to report the reclassification of other activity codes, please contact our colleagues in the Accounting team.

As of 31 August 2025, all other activities under TEÁOR’08 (or earlier) will be closed ex officio by the NAV, with effect from 31 December 2024, regardless of whether the company has declared an activity under TEÁOR’25.
